Bobby Donnell (Dylan McDermott) is a young, idealistic lawyer committed to the pursuit of justice -- and willing to bend the rules to get there. Rather than work at a top Boston law firm, defending the rich and powerful, Bobby chooses to fight for the disenfranchised. He heads a small, working class law practice consisting of Ellenor Fruett (Camryn Manheim), his right-hand person and the voice of reason; Eugene Young (Steve Harris), street-smart and energetic; Lindsay Dole (Kelli Williams), an insecure recent Harvard graduate; Jimmy Berluti (Michael Badalucco), enthusiastic but inexperienced; and Rebecca Washington (Lisa Gay Hamilton), the calm, centered secretary/paralegal.

Bobby and his team often find themselves caught between the glory of practicing law to right wrongs and the pragmatic reality of running a business. It is a constant struggle to remain true to their dreams without compromising themselves solely to make it through the system intact.

As Bobby leaves the courthouse each day, he can't help but notice the gleaming, high-rise towers that house Boston's elite law firms. Someday, his practice will have a decorator-designed lobby with a full-time receptionist. For now, it's enough to keep the creditors somewhat at bay while making a deeply felt difference in people's lives.
